“Eurasian Opera” by the Institute of Music, Poetry and Drama, which has been developing collaborations in various regions of Asia and Europe since 2016. This work, which is the fourth film, focuses on the current culture of Jeju Island in Korea, the Taiwanese aborigines, and Ryukyu (especially Yonaguni Island). Traditional music players, dancers, filmmakers, and artists from Korea, Taiwan, etc., centered around Kawasaki Jun, Jung Won-ki, and both Japanese and Korean composers, weave collaborative works from dialogues with artists who are native to each island and confront the culture of their hometown.
The main cast is Aika Azumori, a young film director and actor from Yonaguni Island. The singing soloists are Eli Liao, who is from Taiwan's native Thai people, and Jeju-do singer/actor Moon Seok-pom. In addition to chamber music ensembles organized in Japan, Kaya Gum from Korea, traditional percussionists, and Chinese sho players from Taiwan also participated. While overlapping the appearance of border crossers moving from island to island by boat and the present diaspora that continues to talk with “hometown,” they visit the original image of what a hometown is like, and search for future forms of multicultural coexistence in their creations.
●Part 1 “And Dance with Your Soul”
On Jeju Island, in order to guide ancestral spirits, a “siwanmaji ceremony (siwan majigut welcoming siwang good = ceremony to welcome the 10 kings of the underworld)” is held where the gods make 10 gates out of bamboo to guide the way and guide that path. Composer Jung Won-ki drew inspiration from Jeju Island's traditional performing arts and composed this new work. “And Dance with Your Soul” is a Requiem, a living ceremony on the boundary between life and death, and “here and now.” This work talks to those of us who have crossed the border, crossed the Kuroshio Sea, and are here and now.
Directed and composed by Jung Won-ki
Fieldwork is carried out based on Jeju Island, and memories of individual and community life are captured through songs. While focusing on the value of human heritage that encompasses people's lives, there has been interest in the diaspora. Theatre pieces using mixed media such as “Purification x Bugaku,” “Echo x Beat,” and “Post Memory” were presented. It is highly anticipated as a standard-bearer for the next generation of Korean art, and the musical director and composer for the 2023/2024 “Jeju 4.3 Eve Festival” received high praise as a representative work of the Jeju 4.3 People's Uprising. Currently, they are deeply interested in the lives of Koreans living in Japan, and in addition to developing new activities focusing on the reality of the division of the Korean Peninsula, they are also attracting attention for the activities of the alternative rock band PUNK DAZE.
●Part 2 Eurasian Opera Op.4 “Children of Kuroshio”
“Eurasian Opera” is a music, poetry and drama research institute that has been developing collaborations in Asia and Europe since 2016. This work focuses on Jeju Island in Korea, Taiwanese aboriginal people, and Ryukyu (especially Yonaguni Island, the westernmost point in Japan), and creates works together with artists from various places. The unknown cultures and unique languages of the islands, which are at the mercy of history and are in danger of extinction, resonate as songs, and rise to the Kuroshio Current.
In these island regions, there must be various “different stories” that could not be discussed in large “history,” such as being washed ashore due to maritime disasters and exchanges with outsiders. Dialogue with the diaspora, which continues to talk with “hometown” in a foreign country, is a concept that has formed the core of Eurasian opera creations up until now, and it has been carried over to this work.
The main cast who crosses the border between islands is Aika Higashimori, a young film director and actor from Yonaguni Island. The singing soloists are Eli Liao, who is from the Taiyar tribe in Taiwan, and the singer and actor Moon Seok-pom from Jeju Island. In addition to chamber music ensembles, Kaya Gum from Korea, traditional percussionists, and Chinese Sho players from Taiwan will also participate.
