Sunamori Katsumi's photo exhibition “Revelational Land” will be held as part of the “UNZEN ART PROJECT 2025: Memories and Expressions in Shimabara, the City of Volcanoes and Art-”.
Photographer Katsumi Sunamori first visited the Shimabara Peninsula in 1993. Large pyroclastic flows occurred due to continuous eruptive activity beginning in 1990, and it was the first large-scale volcanic disaster after the war. -If there is such a thing as “the end of the world,” Sunamori says, it probably indicates this kind of scene. Ten years later, I visited again to check how it had been reconstructed. And today, we are about to enter the 35th year since the Great Pyroclastic Flow occurred. A photo exhibition will be held to pass on memories of disasters for the future to come. Text by Sunamori Kazura
