Now that we have reached the milestone of 80 years since the war, this is a special exhibition that reconsiders the history of Okinawa through personal memories and records.

The Okinawa Memories Initiative (Okinawa Memories Initiative) is a joint project between the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), the Humanities Institute, California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), California State University East Bay (CSUEB), Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and the University of the Ryukyus. A total of 25 people, including 17 undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members from UCSC, CSUMB, and CSUEB, will participate in this visit to Okinawa, and will investigate and study on the themes of various historical experiences in Okinawa - in particular, the Battle of Okinawa, life under US military rule, and memory and history related to the return to Japan.

As part of this, valuable photographs by military doctor Charles Gale, who was stationed in Okinawa under US military rule, held by UCSC will be shown and exhibited. Most of the photographs taken from 1952 to 53 are valuable materials that have not been shown to the public until now, and many images of post-war Okinawa, which are being forgotten, have been recorded before full-scale construction of US military bases began, but there are almost no records left about the locations where many photographs were taken. Therefore, visitors are being asked for information about the location and background of the photographs.
