Lecturer: Futenma Asaka (Director, Himeyuri Peace Museum)

At the end of the Asia-Pacific War 80 years ago, Okinawa became a decisive battleground between the Japanese and US armies. I will explain what the reality of the Battle of Okinawa was like, where 1 in 4 citizens of the prefecture died, and what kind of experiences the Himeyuri Student Corps, which was mobilized in their teens, had. At the same time, we will approach the history of women's education in Okinawa as a prehistory of the Battle of Okinawa, the experiences of Okinawan male and female student corps other than the Himeyuri Student Corps, and the actual images of the teachers who led the student corps. Furthermore, the Peace Museum was established from the grievous experience of losing an alumnus of the student survivors, and their understanding of the peace ideology that war experienced people have cultivated after the war is deepened through the post-war process that has continued to operate for over 30 years thereafter. Deepen awareness of efforts to pass on from those who have experienced it to the next generation to those who have not experienced it, and envision future peace.
