The “National Theater Kura-Kamigata Ukiyo-e Exhibition” will be held at the National Theatre Okinawa to display approximately 40 masterpieces of Kamigata Ukiyo-e from the National Theatre's collection. This is a traveling exhibition of the same special exhibition held at the National Theatre (Tokyo) and the National Bunraku Theatre (Osaka) from 2022 to 2023. This is the first opportunity to introduce Ukiyo-e from the National Theatre's collection in earnest at the National Theatre Okinawa.

Kamigata (Osaka/Kyoto) lags behind Edo by about a century, and unique Ukiyo-e has continued to be produced since the end of the 18th century. Its history is short compared to Edo, and the total number published is not large. Furthermore, unlike Edo, where Ukiyo-e in various fields were published, such as “actor pictures” depicting kabuki actors, “beauty paintings” depicting women, and “landscape paintings,” one of the characteristics of Kamigata was that the ratio of actor pictures was overwhelmingly high. Kamigata Ukiyo-e from the National Theatre Collection is particularly rich in works from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. Furthermore, in addition to actor pictures, there is a wide variety of types, such as toy pictures covered by performing arts, one-page packs of pop songs written by rakugo storytellers, and Nishiki-e newspapers, etc., so you can see how people enjoyed performing arts culture. Kamigata Ukiyo-e from the National Theatre Collection is a unique collection that is rich in characteristics even when viewed from a global perspective. Please enjoy a relaxed view of the world, which is different from Edo.
