Unloading was a smuggling trade in the Edo period. The Tokugawa shogunate imposed a national isolation (sea ban) system as a foreign policy to prevent the spread of Christianity, control trade, and suppress free communication among the people, but the people showed resistance to this in the form of “emptying the load.” Conventionally, Nagasakiguchi has attracted attention as the stage for unpacking in the Edo period, but in this course, we will track the Ryukyu Gate and Satsuma Gate, and touch on a part of the public image of early modern Ryukyu.
