An open study meeting held by the Kanagawa University Non-Written Materials Research Center “Modern and Contemporary Japanese Ritual Spaces and Overseas Shrines” group on the occasion of the publication of “Shuri Castle and Okinawa Shrine 1: Modern Changes Seen from Materials” (Modern and Contemporary Materials Publishing Association, Kanagawa University Non-written Materials Research Series 4), which contains photographs and illustrated text materials related to Shuri Castle and Okinawa Shrine centered on modern times. We discuss the relationship between Shuri Castle and Okinawa Shrine in modern times with people involved in the book and researchers involved in the Shuri Castle issue in local Okinawa, and consider the results.
In order to understand the relationship between modern Okinawa and Japan and religious policy in Okinawa, it is also necessary to consider the relationship between Shuri Castle, which was an important religious space that was once a royal castle, and Okinawa-jinja Shrine built within Shuri Castle. However, in conventional research, Shuri Castle and Okinawa-jinja Shrine in modern times have hardly been discussed on a “common ground floor.” The purpose of this study group is to learn from each research by discussing from both Shuri Castle and Okinawa Shrine, to further explore new research perspectives with the aim of sharing issues and issues.
