A special exhibition by Ryuta Ishii, a professor in the Department of Japanese and East Asian Cultures, Musashi University Faculty of Humanities.
From the 14th century onwards, facilities with walls appeared in various parts of the Ryukyu Islands. In addition to “Gusuku” in the Okinawa Islands, unique wall facilities have appeared in the Sakishima Islands, and along with commonality, differences between regions and ruins are also recognized. Investigators' discussions have continued over this evaluation. There are a wide range of issues, such as what kind of wall it was, what social background the wall was built in, and what kind of life was carried out within the wall.
On Miyako Island, which is located almost in the center of the Ryukyu Islands, there is a characteristic example of constructing a linear masonry wall on a flat ground, and it is attracting attention. In this exhibition, we will introduce wall facilities distributed throughout the Ryukyu Islands, starting from the excavation results of the Miyako Island Kubaka Castle Ruins and Karimata Village, which the planners have promoted with the students, and question medieval Ryukyu history, which was the beginning of the “Wall Era.”
