Modern Okinawan sculpture was dominated by figures. In 1951, a sculpture section was established at the 3rd Oki Exhibition, and later the Okinawan sculpture world came to life with the establishment of the sculpture study group “Kaikai.” After the opening of Okinawa Prefectural University of Art in 1986, many leaders from outside the prefecture visited, and various three-dimensional works were created, spanning a wide range of forms from portraits to abstract forms. Also, opportunities to see a wide variety of works have increased, such as artists from Okinawa Prefecture and artists who were born and raised overseas and created in Okinawa, being introduced. Collection Gallery 2 focuses on modern post-war Okinawan sculpture under the title “Okinawan Sculptures” from the three-dimensional works in the collection.
