The history of Naha began with Oroku.
Multiple prehistoric ruins have been confirmed, such as human remains from over 30,000 years ago, which is said to be the oldest in Japan, and settlement ruins equivalent to the Jomon period, and it can be confirmed that people have been living since early on.
During the reign of Prince Hisasada in 1673, the 3 villages of Oroku Village, Kinjo Village, and Gima Village were divided from the three villages of Shinwashimagiri, and the 8 villages of Omine Village, Uehara Village, Kara Village, Gushi Village, Taima Village, Ajine Village, and Gushi Miyagi Village were divided from Tomigusuku Machiri, and Oroku Mikiri was born as a new administrative district. After that, Kojo Village, Matsukawa Village, Horikawa Village, and Tawara Village were newly established, and in the end, it was a break consisting of 15 villages. Field farming, textile production, and pig farming flourished throughout the early-modern era, but above all, Oroku konji (Urukunji) was shipped outside the prefecture and gained fame.
After the end of the war, most of Oroku village was occupied by the US military, so people who were unable to return to their original area moved to the Takara/Uehara area, and then moved to new buraku built in Tahara from there.
This special exhibition will introduce the history of Oroku from prehistoric times to the post-war period.
