In Japan, indigo dyeing uses “Ryukyu indigo,” a plant found only in Okinawa. Its roots go back to around the 15th century. Although it was overtaken by the Ryukyu Kingdom, chemically synthesized indigo, which can be obtained at low cost, became popular along with the trend of the times, and the number of people engaged in time-consuming indigo work has decreased.
Meanwhile, Kakazu Yoshinari, the owner of the “Ryukyu Indigo Research Institute,” has set up to make Ryukyu indigo dyeing an industry that will continue for decades to come, grow seedlings from where soil is made, consistently handle everything from pickling, extraction, and dyeing of indigo leaves, and is evolving it into a new product while inheriting tradition. This time, they are also exhibiting new products they are working on, such as reusing old clothes and art frames. I will introduce the activities of the Ryukyu Indigo Research Institute, which creates new value in the fields of fashion and interior by making full use of the tradition and inquisitive spirit of Ryukyu indigo.

Also, during the period, at the Ryukyu Indigo Research Institute in Okinawa Craft Forest, in addition to holding a Ryukyu indigo dyeing workshop where you can experience it while learning about indigo dyeing with natural fibers you bring (advance reservation required), the venue will accept re-dyeing with Ryukyu indigo as a special edition of “D&re WEAR,” which revives clothes that have become unwearable due to stains or fading, etc.
