“August 15 Night Chaya” is a comedy set in a fictional village in Okinawa right after the end of the war, and humorously depicts exchanges between the American military and Okinawan residents who advance into Okinawa and try to spread the idea of democracy. It was adapted into a novel (1951), a play (1952), and a film (1956), all of which became a hot topic. In 1954, the play “August 15 Night Chaya” was performed at the Zuikeiran Theater inside the US military facility, but some people voiced discrimination against Okinawans, and the performance scheduled in Naha was postponed. It's been 70 years since then, and what do we feel now through this work? After the film is screened, I think about it in a symposium format.
