Since the Taisho period, many Okinawa Prefecture immigrants have gathered in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama City, and today it is known as “Little Okinawa.” “Okinawan performing arts,” which were brought in along with the migration, became popular as entertainment and hobbies, fostered ethnic identity, and eventually a movement was born to pass it on to the next generation.
This exhibition is a panel exhibition of research reports on such research relating to Tsurumi Ward in Yokohama City. The goal is to show the importance of regional culture and performing arts by re-evaluating the entertainers of Tsurumi, including the deceased, and clarifying the position of “Okinawa performing arts of Tsurumi” in Okinawan performing arts history, leading to the preservation of culture and performing arts in the local community. Information provided by visitors can also be used for future research.
