The Okinawa Islands are currently part of Japan as Okinawa Prefecture, but until Japan annexed them in the Meiji period, they were an independent country called the Ryukyu Kingdom. Ryukyu envoys dispatched during the Edo period were a point of contact between mainland Japan and foreign culture, and were also a point of contact for overseas information. This exhibition introduces the history and culture of Ryukyu and Okinawa from the viewpoint of a “Ryukyu envoy.”
