Contents

“Annals - Mori,” where paper bags for consumables stand up as “trees,” which have continued since the Ryukyu Kingdom period, “Tie, You-I,” which translates present-day Okinawa and the world, and “Monopoly,” which uses toy currency to reveal the power of “symbols” that are popular in our everyday lives.

This is the first large-scale solo exhibition in Okinawa, introducing everything from the early days to the latest works by contemporary artist Teruya Yuken (Teruya Yuken), who is from Okinawa and is based in Berlin, and approaches the overall picture of that work. Teruya's work projects the present of Okinawa, where heavy and pop are mixed, and shakes up “natural,” which we usually don't even care about. It makes me imagine a future where we overcome the divisions and boundaries we face everywhere and think about the future world together.

Teruya Yuken profile
Born in 1973. Born in Haebaru Town, Okinawa. Graduated from Tama Art University in 1996, Department of Oil Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts. Graduated from the New York School of Visual Arts with a master's degree in 2001. Since then, he has been based in New York, Berlin, and Okinawa.
Starting with the “Announcements-Forest” series, issues such as values and frameworks that are not usually noticed are created by shifting the meaning while using daily necessities such as paper bags. Received the 2002 “VOCA Exhibition 2002” Encouragement Award. In the same year, he received the “Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art” New Artist Award. Major solo exhibitions in recent years include “Teruya Yuken: On Okinawa, Collection from the Past and Future” exhibition (2014-15, Berlin National Museum of Asian Art) and the “Okinawa Return 50 Year Special Project Teruya Yuken Exhibition CHORUS” (2022, Naha Culture and Art Theater Nahato).
