Weiwei Wu
Born in Shanghai, China. Real name: Wu Xie Hui.
Began to play the violin at age 5. After going through an elementary school attached to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he majored in violin with erhu at the Shanghai Academy of Drama, then came to Japan in 1991.
In order to open up new possibilities for erhu, they collaborated energetically with musicians of various genres, and in the process, they established unique performance styles, such as devising standing playing styles for erhu that are conventionally performed while sitting. A pioneer of modern erhu who made it possible to perform with rock, jazz, and fusion.
They made their major debut with “Memories of the Future” in 2002/5, and so far they have released 18 albums, including the best edition, and 1 live DVD. In addition to presiding over the Erhu Classroom (Shinken Erhu Classroom), he continues to be active in a wide range of activities, such as collaborating with domestic and international artists such as Sakamoto Ryuichi, Hakase Taro, and Kenny G, and performing with orchestras starting with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
