● Synopsis
Just before Okinawa's return to the mainland in 1972, experts, housewives, old women who experienced war, and mainlanders who immigrated to Okinawa were gathered in one room.
“But do you think you can say that if Japan is attacked by any chance, there will be no war?”
“What does it mean to localize!”
“I also want to say with all my heart that I don't need a base.”
“If being laid-back is a virtue, why not accept the base and do it leisurely?”
The various feelings discussed for Okinawa, feelings for Japan, and feelings for war and permanent peace intersect and are dragged into a vortex.
● Artist comments
I intend to ask questions not only to Okinawans, but to all Japanese people with this work.
Things that people living in Japan today are lacking and should be aware of. Every day we live peacefully and safely is not just Okinawa, but the fact that some places, people, and the environment are sacrificed; I don't think it's the right path by improving all of them, but it's okay to know that and think just a little bit about what is built on that sacrifice and devotion. (Gakuji Awa, playwright)
