Lacquer, which is the sap of the urshinoki tree, has been used on items and crafts around people because of its beautiful luster and durability. The culture of lacquer is unique to Asia, and materials and methods of making them developed according to each climate. The Ryukyu Kingdom, which traded with major powers such as China and Japan, also developed independently, and lacquerware played an important role as traded goods. How were these trade goods and everyday lacquerware shaped, and what kind of colors and patterns were they decorated with? In this permanent exhibition “Colors, Shapes, and Patterns - The Colors of Lacquerware -”, we will focus on and introduce the three elements of “color,” “shape,” and “pattern” that underlie lacquerware in addition to the history of Ryukyu lacquerware.
●Permanent Exhibition-related Event “Special Gallery Talk”
Through the viewpoint of Director Itokazu, who is also a lacquerware manufacturer, they will be asked to introduce how shapes were created and what kind of colors and patterns they were decorated with, the highlights of the exhibited works, technical techniques, etc. in an easy-to-understand manner.
