●Anthropology/Folklore Video Division Competition “Umui “Performing Arts Village”
“Umui Performing Arts Village” depicts the pride, way of life, and conflict of people who pass on Okinawan performing arts from the viewpoint of a Swiss artist. Continuing activities amidst a crisis of population decline, we will record the present form of entertainment and customs in this region in the 21st century by depicting Ryukyu dance and Sanshin (Three-string guitar) and the people surrounding them. Through beautiful images, it has a narrative that is easy for beginners to enthusiasts to learn.

Director's words
Twenty years have passed since I moved to Okinawa. Until now, I've been blessed with the opportunity to see the richness of this island's great culture. The culture is preserved by ancestral traditions that are deeply rooted in the daily lives of the islanders. However, I feel that tradition has been fading over the past few years. I don't know if traditions will survive, and if so, how they will change. In this film, I wanted to pay homage to the “guardians of tradition” who try to protect fading culture in various forms.

Director profile
Daniel Lopez. Spanish-Swiss. He has been based in Okinawa since 2003 and is active as a video artist and photographer. He directed “Katabui Lives in Okinawa” in 2016 and “KAKERU: The Story Behind the Scenes” in 2020. “Umui: The Village of Performing Arts”, which was completed in 2022, is the third feature-length documentary.
