Hirara Koshichi (1939-1994) is a photographer born in Ogimi village, Okinawa Prefecture. In 1970, the “Photobook: The Anguish and Resistance of One Million Citizens of Okinawa Prefecture,” which shows Okinawa shaken by “return,” was published. In 1976, he won the 2nd Kimura Ihei Photography Award for the photo book “Painukaji,” which captures people living on the islands and their landscapes. After that, Taira continued to shoot “records” of people rooted in Okinawa with various themes. Looking at Okinawa's “return” to Japan, Hirara's photograph, which captures the changing “reality” of Okinawa while looking at the “base” of Okinawa while being in a turbulent era, still questions the viewer with intensity. This exhibition looks back on Hirara's footprints from the photographs left behind.
