In the 1950s, the number of people suffering from leprosy increased in Okinawa, which experienced ground battles, and nearly 1,000 people lived in Airakuen. Among them, children were included, and when there were many, nearly 80 children lived in boys and girls houses.
While patient isolation was promoted even after the war, promine treatment began in Okinawa in 1949. The adults in the garden hoped that children living in Airakuen would receive the same education as children outside the park and acquire the ability to live in general society. Beginning in the 1950s, literary activities flourished at Airakuen, and he was also active in the Okinawan literary world. The children also presented various literary works on the organization paper in the park.
How did children live in Airakuen and what did they think? An exhibition of works that you can feel from children's works now in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
During the exhibition, events such as gallery talks and readings of works by graduates and curators in charge will also be held.
