In the special exhibition room, the history of the Ryukyu King Hisaya and relics from the Kingdom period are introduced through arts and crafts materials and documents of the “National Treasure Ryukyu King Shouke Related Materials” every month.

This month, I will introduce “children's fine costumes” from the Hisashi family materials. The royal family and upper class warriors of the Kingdom period also wore beautiful fine clothes made of red patterns or silk fabrics unique to the upper class during events such as New Year's. Toddler costumes are tailored so that “furrows” are placed on the shoulders and body, and sleeve length and height can be adjusted as they grow. Also, a decorative thread called “mabuyahu (soul thread)” was attached to the bottom of the collar on the back. Children's souls are weak and fall out of their bodies easily, so Mabuyahu was thought of as a talisman to stop them.

Furnishings include the “Shuri Naha Bird's Eye View Screen” and the “Red Lacquer Basho Mannen Seimon, Shen Jindui Nishiki Seitai.” If you look closely at the Shuri Naha birdwatching folding screen, a curtain (sudare) with a crane drawn on it is hung on the main hall of Shuri Castle in the upper right corner. This is a New Year's ornament used at Shuri Castle during the Kingdom period, and you can see from this that it depicts New Year's scenery. The red lacquer basho mannenseimon shinkindui nendui kinshodachi has a pattern of basho on one side and a perpetual blue pattern on the other. Since evergreen leaves are always covered with green leaves, it is regarded as a symbol of longevity. Both are congratulatory symbols suitable for the new year.

As for documents, documents and materials that have been repaired are displayed. There are damage materials among the national treasure “Ryukyu King Shouke Related Materials,” and repair work is being carried out continuously. Repaired materials are exhibited and shown, and copies are made so that more people can use the materials.
