On September 7, 1945, the surrender signing ceremony was held between the US Army and the Japanese defensive forces of the Nansei Islands in Morine (present-day Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa City), officially concluded the Battle of Okinawa. Okinawa City establishes this day as “the day of taking precious first steps toward peace” and is designated as “Okinawa Citizens Peace Day” in 1995, and a commemorative event is held on September 7 every year.
