Profile

Born in 1954 in Yona, Kunigami-son, Okinawa Prefecture, and raised in Yasuda. In his twenties, he participated in the national tournament “NHK's throat boast” as a representative of the Okinawa district, and singing “Bashofu” led to a national hit of the song. Then he went to Tokyo and debuted at the age of 31. The exploration of Latin music began by meeting Mr. Naoteru MISUNA of Tokyo Cuban Boys, a pioneer of Cuban salsa band. I visited Cuba for the first time in 1989, and I was impressed by the authentic wild rhythm, music and cuddling life. The most shocking thing was Okinawa, where people's smiles, labor, and scenery overlaps. With a long life in Tokyo, the nostalgia I forgot gushes out on an island called Cuba. After returning to Japan, he opened up a unique world of Taira Yuki, incorporating Okinawan folk songs, oral bushi, Cuban sons and sunderia of religious music. From 2003, I decided to study in Cuba at the age of 49 for a year 3 months. While studying in Cuba, he studied under Son's master Pedro Lugo Martinez. In 2013, he invited a teacher to Okinawa to perform co-starring. Currently, he is based in Okinawa as a Uchina-Latin singer. In addition, Ishunu Flower Concert, which is held in northern Yambaru every May since 1999, is planned and produced by Taira. In this event, the audience and residents will carry out tree planting activities of Iju, a symbol of Yanbaru.
