Early modern Ryukyu painters studied abroad in the Fujian region of China, and made use of their learning there to create unique Ryukyu painting styles. Sun Yi, who was active in Fujian in the 17th to 18th centuries, is a well-known person as their mentor. So, in the entire history of Chinese painting, what kind of region is Fujian understood, and how is Sun Yi's painting industry positioned? Along with a guide to the world of Chinese painting history, we will also approach the appeal of Ryukyu painters studying abroad.
