“Ogoe (Ogoe)” is a portrait drawn after the death of the King of Ryukyu, and was managed by Engaku-ji Temple, the family temple of the royal family. After the Ryukyu disposition, pictures of successive kings and princes of the Second Hisashi clan were kept at Nakagusuku Palace, which was the royal family's residence, but their location became unknown during the turbulent period after the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Over a long period of time since then, black and white photographs taken by Kamakura Yoshitaro in the Taisho period have been used as the only material conveying the actual image of the gogoe. However, in 2024/3, 79 years after the war, 4 actual post-war paintings were returned from America and attracted a great deal of attention, and restoration work is currently underway. In this exhibition, a full-scale photo panel of an afterimage created by Kamakura Yoshitaro using high-definition digital images made by photographing glass plates taken in the Taisho period using the latest digital technology from the Tokyo Research Institute for Cultural Properties will be shown for the first time. At the same time, paper-baked photographs of the gogoe, which have been designated as an important cultural property, and digital photographs of the 4 aftereffects that returned to Japan last year will also be exhibited.
