Lecturer: Tani Kenichiro (National Museum of Science, National Science Museum)
Igneous rocks and submarine volcanoes formed by solidifying magma are scattered all over the islands and surrounding waters of the Ryukyu Islands. We have conducted deep-sea surveys not only on land, but also on the manned submersible “Shinkai 6500,” etc., and investigated the history of magmatic activity up to the present form of the Ryukyu Islands formed at the edge of the continent. In this lecture, I will introduce the origin of the Ryukyu Islands and submarine volcanic activity that is still active today, in an easy-to-understand manner, based on research results so far, with deep-sea images, etc.
