HAYATO MACHIDA uses ready-made products, plants, motifs borrowed from influenced pop culture, etc., to make questions about the existence of an ambiguous self, and ambivalent feelings and conflicting values at the point of contact with society coexist on the screen, and depict that ambivalence. “Sugarcoat,” which is included in the title, has the meaning of changing from being coated with sweet sugar, covering something, and making it look presentable. In this exhibition, a new 8-disc set with an interchangeable structure using the crimson pattern dyeing method will be presented. This painting, whose display method can be selected depending on the exhibitor, does not have a center, and images can be replaced. While the scattered symbols invite interpretation, they suggest what is wrapped behind them and hidden, but they slip through fixation of meaning by repeated repetition outside the screen. These paintings make quick interpretation impossible, and they keep the viewer in place for a long time.
