Nichiedai (sundial: sundial) is said to have measured the time around noon at Shuri Castle during the Shuri Imperial Palace period. Hikagedai is a sundial that has been used as an auxiliary tool for the water clock installed at the Rokokumon (Rokokumon), and it is said that in 1739, an official named Tsai Wen (Saion) established an accurate measurement method over a year and a half by order of the king.
Currently, angle tables are replaced 4 times a year at Shurijo Castle Park for the spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox, and winter solstice, and explanation sessions are held accordingly. Starting with the history and measurement methods of Hikagedai, I will also explain how to tell the time during the Ryukyu Dynasty.
