In Okinawa, various folk performing arts have been handed down from generation to generation in each region. Among them, in this performance, we will take the performing arts of “Hateruma Island,” which is the southernmost point in Japan. Hateruma Island has preserved and inherited unique performing arts even within the Yaeyama Islands, and in particular, “Musyama,” which is held during the Kyubon (Bon festival on lunar calendar) festival, is a festival where many performing arts including prayers such as Gokoku hojo (A pray for an abundant grain harvest) and memorial services for ancestors remain. This performance will focus on folk performing arts performed in “Musyama.”

Commentary: Iida Yasuhiko (Taketomi Town Board of Education)
