80 Years After the War “Nuchidu Takara: Map of the Battle of Okinawa” Exhibition 2025/6/5 (Thu) - 2026/1/26 (Mon)
*Some exhibitions may be changed during the period

As a permanent exhibition, all 14 parts of the series “Map of the Battle of Okinawa,” which are usually 5 to 7 works, will be exhibited. In addition, there are 4 works by Kinoshita Susumu, who is called the leading expert in pencil drawing, and 28 impressive works, such as Uchida Aguri's “Deep River - Zai,” which was also introduced in the evening edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun “100 Years of Japanese Painting and Japanese Paper: Collaboration between Paper Makers and Painters” on 5/18.

The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and Maruki Iri (1901-1995) and Maruki Shun (1912-2000) continued to draw the horrors of nuclear weapons that humans first experienced in all 15 parts of “Map of the Atomic Bomb” for over 30 years. In his later years, when Iri was 81 and Shun 70, he worked on the Battle of Okinawa, where he experienced ground battles. Part 14 of “Map of the Battle of Okinawa,” which took 6 years to produce, was the culmination of the painting industry of two people like a mountain range.
In the series of “Map of the Battle of Okinawa,” Okinawan people testified in front of Mr. and Mrs. Maruki, became models, and were drawn “on site” in Okinawa. “We who don't know ground warfare must learn from Okinawans,” Maruki and his wife energetically visited the sites and people of the Kerama Islands, Okinawa Island, Kume Island, and Ie Island.
“No matter how you look at Okinawa, the most difficult thing in the upcoming war is happening. I drew the atomic bomb, drew the Nanjing Massacre, and drew Auschwitz, but depicting Okinawa is the greatest depiction of war” (Yuri), “This is a joint production between us and the Okinawan people.” “We must not simply think about war. It's not that Japan lost or America won; the most important thing has been hidden; we must know this and dig deep and think about it.” (Shun)
“Map of the Battle of Okinawa” contains Mr. and Mrs. Maruki's deep repose for “humans and life,” and the determination of the people who survived the ground war to “live no matter what happens (Nchidu Takara, Nuchidu Takara).”
