Lacquerware from the Ryukyu Kingdom period was not only a tool used within the kingdom, but it was also an important item used in national diplomacy, such as gifts to the Chinese emperor and the Tokugawa shogun. Wangfu established the “Kaizuri Magistrate's Office” and made efforts to produce it. They learned techniques from China, and also used Japanese wood, etc., and decorated lacquerware with karamono-style (Chinese style) patterns using various techniques such as spiral, silver, duikin, and foil painting. In this exhibition, lacquerware from the 18th to 19th century, which was produced continuously during the Kingdom period, will be introduced using the Urasoe Art Museum's collection and ancient documents and lacquerware shown for the first time in Okinawa.

Also, the exterior walls of the main hall of Shuri Castle, which is undergoing reconstruction, have been lacquered, and it is supposed to be revived in its appearance from around the 18th century. The restoration and reprint production of lacquerware from the Kingdom period, which Okinawa Prefecture and the Bank of the Ryukyus are working on, is also being carried out by learning from old masterpieces. The cultural heritage “lacquerware” of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which extends to the present day, will be introduced as a commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the opening of the Urasoe Art Museum.
