Lecturer: Hirano Naohiro (Assistant Professor, Department of Marine Science, University of the Ryukyus)

The Ryukyu Islands are a biodiversity hotspot, and land shellfish such as snails are no exception. I will introduce research examples that approach the evolutionary history of how the high species diversity seen in this region occurred, making use of the strengths of islands and regions. We will talk about new insights into evolutionary ecology that can be seen from evolutionary research using land shellfish as models, and conservation issues for land shellfish on islands in crisis situations.
