Ryukyu Vortex 2000-2005
This is a picture from when I was still in my 20s and started aiming to become a photographer. Through my magazine work, I simply picked up my camera and jumped into the whirlpool of enthusiasm in the Okinawan music scene, which was showing excitement at the time, without knowing why. If I think about it now, the city, people, and love were like that. These are photographs that capture the feverish everyday life of those days. 2025 Spring Owan Asataro

“Mana is warm”
An unpublished film taken by Owan in recent years. He is also active as a commercial photographer in the prefecture, and has lived a long hospital life in recent years to treat chronic diseases involving his life. I “just wanted to take a picture” of the scene I saw from that hospital room. Also, it is said that even after he was discharged from the hospital, the way he felt about the light reflected in his eyes changed within himself. The photograph, which was taken so that “the life that is here and now” is bluntly engraved on the lens from casual everyday scenes and everyday life, is somewhere warm, and shows a unique photographic world view where the light of the south slowly comes into the eye.

●Asataro Owan Profile
Born in Okinawa City, Okinawa Prefecture, he became independent as a freelance photographer in 2002. From the same year until 2009, I worked as a photographer for the magazine “Monthly Hands,” which disseminates Okinawan music, art, fashion, and culture inside and outside the prefecture. Since then, until now, he has covered a wide range of shooting genres centered on music scenes, such as portraits of artists and live shows, and has worked on shooting for a wide range of media such as magazines, advertisements, CD jackets, and the internet.
