Japan has the largest number of US military bases in the world, and American soldiers are stationed there. Not only the US military, but also the friendly “United Nations Force” has been stationed consistently since the end of the war. Why and when did Japan become a base power? What is the United Nations military, which is the reverse face of the US military? Today, US military bases are concentrated in Okinawa, but is that Okinawa's “destiny”?
In this course, based on newly discovered historical materials, we will give an overview of everything from the occupation period to the Korean War, security revisions, the return of Okinawa, the end of the Cold War, and the modern Futenma relocation issue, and search for solutions to the problems. Also, I will explain the contents of the new publication “US Military Bases in Japan - US Army and United Nations Forces, 80 Years of “Two Faces” (Chuko Shinsho), and critically examine the common theory that “Japan provides bases and the United States defends.”
