The bell of Bankoku Shinryo at Shuri Castle. Its history has been turbulent. The inscription “Bankoku Shinryo” engraved on the bell is a symbol of the prosperity of the trading nation Ryukyu, but the skeleton damaged by bullets and shells is also a silent witness to the disastrous Battle of Okinawa. During the Kingdom period, it was hung on Nishinoazana as a bell of time, and the Shurijo Castle Kankaimon (Ukejo) gate used that sound as a signal. Even after the fall of the kingdom, it followed a strange fate. For details, see “Shurijo Castle Study” No. 16 and the lecture.
