Explanation of the work
Unique people appear, such as a surfer, rapper, and a fisherman's grandfather with 40 children
When you hear the Gaza Strip, what kind of place do you imagine? You probably think of images of dangerous wars such as “the most dangerous place in the world,” “conflict zones,” “missiles,” and “tanks.” Then you'll discover a completely different side of Gaza in this film. Facing the calm and beautiful Mediterranean Sea, Gaza has a warm climate and is famous for flowers and strawberries. Young people enjoy surfing, and men and women of all ages visit the beach. If you meet the high-spirited owner of a seaside cafe in the morning, everyone will definitely have a happy day. Other than that, people singing in taxis and young rappers shouting overflowing feelings, such as a fisherman grandpa with 3 wives and 40 children, also appear. There is no doubt that you will be fascinated by the unique people of Gaza. “I want peace. I just want to live a normal life.” But the reality is harsh. About 70% of the residents of Gaza, where about 2 million Palestinians live in a small area of about 60% of Tokyo's 23 wards, are refugees and are living in poverty. Israel not only encircles Gaza with walls, but has continued a blockade policy that restricts the movement of goods and people since 2007, and Gaza, where freedom of land, sea, and air has been taken away, is called a “prison without a ceiling.” In the 2014 and 2018 wars, many schools, hospitals, houses, power plants, etc. were destroyed, and many lives were lost, so there is no guarantee of life here. Nevertheless, there are people who try to live their everyday lives powerfully. Karma, who plays the cello to escape reality at age 19, wants to study international law and political science by studying abroad. Fourteen-year-old Ahmad's dream is to become the captain of a large fishing boat and go fishing with his siblings. “What I want is peace and a normal life.” The people of Gaza are still dreaming of a normal life today.
