It's been 80 years since the “Tsushima Maru Incident.” If only two ships could talk...
On 1944/8/22, the American submarine “Boffin” torpedoed and sank the evacuation ship “Tsushima Maru,” which was sailing from Okinawa to Kyushu. Of the 1,788 people on board, 1,484 died. There are 784 children. The “Tsushima Maru” is still sinking 880 meters below the sea. Meanwhile, “Boffin,” which played an active part in this war even after the incident, is on display at the Boffin Submarine Museum in Hawaii with the results of that battle.

In the picture book “Tsushima Maru and Bofin,” co-authored by Ikezawa Natsuki and Kuroda Seitaro, the situation at the time of the incident and its horror is conveyed from the dialogue between “Tsushima Maru” and “Bofin,” and also tells the emptiness and horror of war that leaves a big scar on anyone involved in the war regardless of enemies or allies.
