There is actually a big mystery about species endemic to Miyako, such as the Oyakokana snake, Oyakokiba, and Japanese mackerel crab. Miyako is thought to have sunk several times, but research results suggest that the ancestors of some endemic species may have already existed while Miyako was submerged in the sea. While Miyako sank into the sea, where exactly were the ancestors of today's endemic species? Also, how did they get to Miyako, which is far from other islands? At this exhibition, we will be discussing this “mystery of endemic species”, starting with new research results.
