Lecturer: Daiki Kishaba (curator, Ohama Nobumoto Memorial Hall)

Ohama Nobuizumi (1891-1976) is known for being the 7th president of Waseda University from 1954 to 1966, who was from Ishigaki Island. When Ohama served as president, Okinawa was a time when it was placed “under the rule” of the United States. It was a time when many of our ancestors worked hard to realize “succession” from the ruling society. While Ohama himself also held an important position as president of Waseda University, he continued to face various issues piled up in Okinawa, sometimes from a remote place in Tokyo, and sometimes visited Okinawa. These footprints can be known from existing records of official documents, newspaper articles, etc., and Ohama's own notes, and they span a wide range of fields, such as society and culture surrounding Okinawa, and it is possible to listen to Mr. Ohama's thoughts on Okinawa. In this course, while tracing these materials, we will focus on the words that Ohama left to future generations, and decipher thoughts about the future development of Okinawa.
