In Chatan Town, on 1946/10/22, the US military allowed them to live in a part of the town, and post-war reconstruction from scratch began. In Chatan Town, this important anniversary is designated as “Chatan Townspeople Peace Day,” and the “Peace Memorial Festival” is held every year for 10 days from the same day until the end of October as a “peace promotion season.” In 2024, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Chatan Nirai Center (Lifelong learning & community Center) and the 80th anniversary since the Tsushima Maru Incident, both sides will be combined to re-perform the creative group dance “Tsushima Maru,” which was announced in 2019. It depicts the preciousness of life, powerless Okinawa, and the misery of war while being at the mercy of war, and they seek peace together.
