Paintings from the Ryukyu Kingdom period were painted on Japanese paper or silk with ink and mineral pigments. After the Meiji period, paintings “Western-style paintings” drawn with oil paint became mainstream. Why did Western-style movies become mainstream? Based on an exhibition explanation of Ryukyu paintings, I will explain the historical background related to art from the Meiji period onwards.
