The post-war administration of Okinawa by the United States was based, for the time being, on Article 3 of the Peace Treaty with Japan. Both the Japanese and US governments tried to achieve their respective goals by making the most of the vague expressions in the peace treaty, but in the process, the Okinawan residents' right to self-determination and basic human rights were neglected, and the seeds of the “Okinawa problem,” which had become rather serious after 50 years of return, were sown. In this lecture, I would like to consider the history and current state of Okinawa from a larger perspective that goes beyond the temporal and geographical framework of post-war Okinawa while examining the legal aspects of the administration of Okinawa by the United States, which have not been talked about until now.
