African gypsy came to Okinawa about 90 years ago. Generally, it is said that it was “brought in for edible/medicinal purposes,” but the real reason seems to be different. It is also frowned upon as an agricultural pest that carries parasites, but in the past there were times when it was touted and useful by us humans. In this lecture, I will focus on the characteristics of African gypsophila as living creatures and their historical relationships with Okinawan citizens, with information that has not been well known until now.
