In Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, there have been over 100 deaths due to wildfires, etc. that occurred on 2023/8/8, and enormous damage has occurred due to the burning of urban areas, including historic protected areas. In the past, Lahaina had a large Okinawan community with many Okinawa Prefecture people of Okinawan descent even on Maui. In the post-war Okinawa relief activities, many relief supplies were delivered from Lahaina, hoping for the reconstruction of the home prefecture. In this lecture, we will trace the history of people of Okinawan descent in Lahaina and Maui, and introduce the Lahaina damage situation and fundraising activities of the Okinawa Hawaii Association (Okinawa) and the Hawaii Okinawa Federation (Hawaii). Also, we will look back on the history of the Lahaina Public Library, which was affected by the disaster by the Hawaii State Library, which has signed a sister library agreement.
