Speaker: Hiroaki Hara (Okinawa Prefectural Library Library/Okinawa Immigration Studies)

In Lahaina, where wildfires occurred in August and major damage was caused, there were many people of prefectural descent even on Maui, and there used to be a large Okinawan community. In the post-war Okinawa relief activities, many relief supplies were delivered from Lahaina, hoping for the reconstruction of the home prefecture.
In this lecture, we will trace the history of people of Okinawan descent in Lahaina and Maui, and introduce the damage situation in Lahaina and the fundraising activities of the Okinawa Hawaii Association (Okinawa) and the Hawaii Okinawa Federation (Hawaii). Also, we will look back on the history of the Lahaina Public Library, which was affected by the disaster by the Hawaii State Library, which has signed a sister library agreement.
Simultaneous interpretation is available in Japanese, English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Also, from 8/30 to 10/2, a Maui Lahaina reconstruction support panel exhibition will be held near the 3rd floor entrance of the library.
