Hikageidai (sundial: sundial) is said to have measured the time at noon and around noon at Shuri Castle during the Shuri Wangfu period. Hikagedai is a sundial that has been used as an auxiliary tool for the water clock installed on the Rokkomon (Rokokumon) gate (Roko Komon), and it is said that in 1739, an official named Cai Wen (Saion) established an accurate measurement method over a year and a half by order of the king.
Currently, angle stands are replaced 4 times a year at Shurijo Castle Park during the spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox, and winter solstice, and briefing sessions are held accordingly. Starting with the history of Hikagedai and measurement methods, I will also explain how to tell the time. Participants will be distributed handmade sheets of sundials that they can enjoy at home.
