Comment from Director Tsuchiya Seiichi
“This exhibition questions whether the characteristics of modern Okinawa can be seen by meeting the works of up-and-coming artists developing unique works using only the geographical edge of Okinawa as a clue, and that is why, even if they are not necessarily paintings, there are things that can be visualized by comprehensively calling them “Okinawa-Ga” (Okinawa-Ga).
In other words, while taking on the local context of Okinawa, at the same time, they establish the name “Okinawan painting” as a framework where anything can be substituted. At the same time, this “Okinawan painting” initiative is not necessarily limited to the geographical, historical, and cultural conditions of Okinawa; it can also be developed transnationally in other contexts, and it also aims to be connected to other local knowledge and ideas for survival strategies.”
