The Shiretoko peninsula “Rausu” can be said to be located at the exact opposite end of Japan, far from Ishigaki Island. With the towering Shiretoko mountain range in the background, there is the Nemuro Strait right in front of you, and many fish and marine mammals, including salmon returning to spawn, visit that deep, rich sea. In the fall, large stationary nets are filled with salmon, and fishing ports, where many fishing boats enter and leave in the morning and evening, are booming. In winter, ice floes rush in from as far away as Russia, and ice containing nutrients melts in spring, supporting the richness of the ocean. In the land called Rausu, it is the sea, mountains, and salmon that connect various creatures, including humans. Works that express the unique beauty and severity of nature at the northern tip of Japan, from the sea to the mountains, are on display.
