Chikako Yamashiro (1976-) has been consistently praised since the early days for her works born from taking and confronting events that come to our consciousness by living in Okinawa. Activities have continued with photography and video as the axis of production, and in recent years, while approaching and deciphering present-day Okinawa from various aspects such as politics, society, culture, and the natural environment, they have created works with a high narrative that connects the past to the present with a long-term perspective. There, reality, which is intricately intertwined, is transformed into a rich story because it is handled with that complexity, and it makes you feel strength and suppleness that is not excessively bound by reality. Also, in the new work, images that go back and forth between the present and the past, supported by a quiet gaze, are developed, and interpretation is left to the viewer. What kind of future can we create from here on out? In this exhibition, we will introduce the world of Yamashiro's work while referring to early works, centering on recent and new works that give a new reading to the present day.
